Dream Model Street School (DMSS) is a flagship project of Dream Foundation Trust which has initiated number of projects with the aim to bring positive change in the deprived communities of surrounding area.

The initial theme of the project was to establish a school in Moach Goth, a slum area of Karachi, Pakistan, as there was no affordable school in the area to accommodate children of under privileged communities. As the impoverished children did not have schooling facility, they were wasting their time playing in streets. The parents were also not interested in educating their children. In fact due to abject poverty in area, parents were keen on encouraging children to work and contribute to household living expenses.

A few private schools in adjoining areas were too expensive for the people where income of the family remains around 1 US Dollar a day.

Dream Foundation Trust started its education project with meagre resources and based on consistent efforts it got support from local NGOs who helped in setting up curriculum and teacher trainings. Dream Foundation Trust is constantly making efforts to provide quality education by introducing latest teaching techniques and online learning through innovative software including available IT tools. The students are encouraged to participate in learning process and they are also taught various skills. Children are taught socio-economic enhancement education, Gender, Social and Civic responsibilities as well as the education to respect minorities and their religion.

As child abuse is common in the area, the children and elders are provided appropriate counselling to create child-friendly environment. Our team of counsellors spends time with children and make conscious attempt to learn about the problems and solve them accordingly.

WHAT MAKES OUR EDUCATION MODEL DIFFERENT?

The Dream Model Street School is different to most other schools which cater for children from lower socio economic backgrounds. The uniqueness of our education model does not allow us to carry prevalent education methodologies, and strictly guides us to avoid using rote methods: learning just through books.

THE INNOVATIONS/CONCEPTS ARE:

  • A real emphasis on training and development to improve the quality of teaching and opportunities for learning, for the pupils.

  • An approach to teaching and learning which considers the child’s interests and motivation.

  • An enthusiasm to use IT to enhance learning opportunities for children.

  • An interest in developing the children’s talents in addition to their academic achievements.

  • A holistic approach to education which includes the development of citizenship skills – leadership, civic sense, team work, inclusiveness.

  • A community based approach where the teachers know the children well and serve as role models within the community, rather than teachers  who have little understanding or empathy with the community, being ‘bussed in’.

  • An inclusive and nonselective admission policy where children with disabilities are also admitted.

  • An environment to enable students to become thinkers and analyst, able to raise relevant questions.

  • Produce creative members of the society able to bring solutions.

  • Develop effective communication skills of the students.

  • Science gives students the tools to investigate their environment and to experiment, this increasing their ability to analyse and make sense of the world around them.

  • While realising the importance of parents’ participation in their children’s education, special sessions will be organized on different occasions for the parents to develop understanding between Teachers & Parents and Students & Parents.

  • Training, Assessments and Exposure visits for teachers to become more intellect and creative.

Dream Model Street School does not charge any kind of fee from students, encouraging parents to take charge & responsibility and make sure that their kids attend school regularly and punctually.

SUMMER CAMP

DMSS conducts summer camps every year for the students both youth and children to give every young person an opportunity to show their talents and learn a host of skills. Kids come together to have fun. They develop a sense of independence as they try new things away from formal schooling. Tis the time when teachers and students create close bond and become more open to each other where kids do not feel shy asking a question to his/her teacher. They are provided a healthy environment where they gain self-confidence as they learn new skills. We also work on kids to develop a variety of social skills (e.g. communication, conflict resolution ability).

DREAM SPORTS

DMSS has formed different sports team like Cricket, Badminton, Football and some indoor games like Carom Board. The theme of such activities is to provide a proper environment to the young people of Muwach, leading them toward positive activities. So far, Dream Foundation Trust has organized 3 mega sports tournament; Football tournament in 2011, Sports gala in in 2013 and cricket tournament in 2014.

ANNUAL AWARD DISTRIBUTION CEREMONY

Annual Award Distribution Ceremony gives every kid an opportunity to perform on stage in front of hundreds of community members. Stage performances typically range from singing, joke skits, tableaus, and regional dances, instrumentals either in groups or as solo performance.

PICNIC & VISITS

Dream Foundation Trust arranges yearly picnic for the students. Such visits energize them and create more interest in the organization and school affairs.

Extracurricular activities like picnic or exposure visits invigorate students and teachers to produce creative ideas and build confidence.

DREAM LIBRARY

Dream Library was established in 2007. Library is currently limited just school use; encyclopedic, story books, newspapers, novels, and informative books give them a variety of taste of read and information.

Our plan by 2019 is to create a big library for the community of Moach Goth.

ISLAMIC EDUCATION

Dream Foundation Trust is running an Islamic Education setup during school hours. Children are taught the basics of Holy Qur’an. The School is not under the influence of any religious organization. There’re two hundred students who are learning the Qur’an.
